Marianne said the fort is gone, but the ground still remembers the shape of its rings. People levelled the earth long before the surveyors arrived, perhaps hungry for pasture or proud of owning what they did not understand. The fairies lost their house and scattered into the rain, leaving behind a flat field that refuses to drain cleanly. Marianne walks past the spot with her hand in her pocket, carrying a small stone taken from the ruin. She does not know which angle of the fort the stone belonged to, only that the field feels incomplete when she leaves it behind.
