Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cnoc An Iúir

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No human has touched Cnoc An Iúir for centuries, yet the fort remains sharp enough to cut skin. It is a fairy fort, a place where the boundaries between worlds grow thin and human laws stop applying. The steady hand that built it is gone, but the shape endures, waiting for someone foolish enough to enter. What was forgotten by people has been remembered by something else.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Circular area (28m N-S; 27m E-W) enclosed by earth and stone bank (max. int. H 1.6m). Bank topped by stone field boundary (H 1m). Interior level; cut into hillside on upslope. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
