Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cnoc An Iúir

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Flatter than expectation, the fort sits half sunk in a hillside, its bank throwing shadow across the pasture at noon. The earth was cut from the north and carried south to level the floor, a brutal amount of work for a small circle. The underground passage in the southwest quadrant suggests the site hid people, goods or memory from ordinary sight.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Roughly circular area (32m N-S; 31m E-W) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1.4m). Bank to E less curved and stone-faced due to inclusion in field fence system; gaps to NNE, S and SSW. Interior cut into hill on N side and raised on S and E side to compensate for hillslope. Man-made underground passage (CO058-055002-) in SW quadrant. All surrounding field fences removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
