Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clooskirt is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Clooskirt, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a south-facing ridge slope as a sixty by fifty metre oval bounded by a scarp and a rush-filled fosse. A small-stone scarp marks the eastern interior, while a possible underground passage and a northern enclosure complete the visible remains.
On the S-facing slope of a ridge. A raised oval area (60m N-S; 50m E-W) defined by a scarp (max. H 1.3m at S; min. H 0.2m at N) and an external fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.4-0.6m). The fosse is marked by a dense growth of rushes. The interior slopes steeply down to S; roughly midway along the E half, a sharp break of slope is marked by a scarp faced with small stones. There is a possible Man-made underground passage (SL027-055002-) in the SE quadrant. An enclosure (SL027-054----) lies immediately to N and a field boundary immediately to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
