Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonoranoughter

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Cloonoranoughter holds a broken fairy fort where quarrying bit through ancient earth. What remains is a shallow oval scar in flat farmland, wide enough for a small house but no longer strong enough to keep out rain, boots or forgetting. The loss is not distant; it happened in the same soil where people still drive trucks and take stone.
In flat farmland. Poorly preserved subcircular enclosure (N-S 27m, E-W 17m) defined by a low scarp at N and S. Quarrying at N, E and W has obliterated much of this monument. A depression is visible in S sector of the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
