Fairy forts are earthen rings, not magical buildings. Cloonkeen is no exception. The ring may have been a boundary marker, a farm yard, a burial edge or a seasonal gathering place. People lived beside it, not inside a fairy tale. The soil and grass still hold the shape of that human choice.

On the SW slope of a low rise in pasture. In the summer of 1975 (SMR file) an almost circular area (int. diam. 31m) was indicated by a change in vegetation: a band (Wth 4-5m) of parched pasture from NW-E-SW.
