Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clooneen (kennedy)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clooneen holds a forgotten ringfort on wet marshy ground beside the eastern Shannon bank. The 1837 Ordnance Survey map drew a clear circular enclosure labelled Fort, but water and time erased the earthworks from human sight. The river likely swallowed the fort after people stopped defending it, leaving behind a hidden shape that can only be imagined beneath the marsh.
On wet marshy ground adjacent to the E bank of the river Shannon. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 29 November 2011
