Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Cloonascragh: a subcircular rath, roughly 53 metres east-west and 48.5 north-south, set in level grassland beside bogland. Two banks and a ditch once enclosed it; now the inner bank shows from southwest to northwest and northeast to southeast, while the outer bank survives only from southeast to southwest. A field bank cuts through at the southwest, and several gaps look like later damage rather than ancient doors. What remains is enough to picture a compact defended place, partly erased by time and use.
In level grassland bordering on bogland to SW. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (E-W 53m, N-S 48.5m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is present from SW to NW and from NE to SE; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. The outer bank survives only from SE to SW. Numerous breaches in the enclosing elements appear modern. A field bank cuts the monument at SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
