Three hidden ditches circle a vanished fort in Cloghna, large enough to touch only through cropmarks and imagination. The oldest part may have been a simple enclosed place, later strengthened into a deeper defensive ring. People likely lived, argued, buried their dead and forgot the fort before it became a fairy tale.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 23 December 2010 Aerial photographs (CUCAP BGH 32-3; GB91.DY. 02) show circular area enclosed by cropmarks of three concentric but slightly irregular fosses (est max. diam. c. 65m). At W, cropmark of fosse defining apparently circular and earlier enclosure (CW012-009002-). No visible traces at ground level. Possibly multivallate ringfort partly overlying circular enclosure of indeterminate type.

A fairy fort, or earthen ringfort in Cloghna, is a circular earthwork enclosure typical of early-medieval Ireland, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folk, and they were often avoided for fear of disturbing supernatural inhabitants.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
