What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloghkeating, Mertonhall is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cloghkeating, Mertonhall, County Tipperary, Ireland. It stands on an east-west ridge in undulating countryside with extensive views. The well-preserved site contains a 50-metre east-west raised platform enclosed by a 2-metre-wide earth and stone bank. A 4-metre-wide, 1.1-metre-deep flat-bottomed ditch surrounds the bank, and a 9-metre-wide entrance gap opens at the north-northeast.
Situated on top of an E-W ridge in undulating countryside with extensive views. An impressive well-preserved raised platform (diam. 50m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.3-1.5m; ext. H 2-4m) with wide flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 4m; D 1.1m) and entrance gap (Wth 9m) at NNE. A semicircular conjoined enclosure to the SW of the external fosse may be contemporary with the sweathouse (2471) which is built into the enclosing fosse of the ringfort at SW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
