Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clievragh, listowel

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

An unknown modern building now covers the vanished Clievragh ringfort. The earthwork still appeared on both the 1841-42 and 1939 OS maps, but it has been completely levelled. Under that new floor lies a forgotten circular room where someone once lived, loved, raged and bled. The house stands above a dead fortress, using its bones as a foundation while pretending the old world never existed.
This circular enclosure is marked on the 1841-42 and 1939 OS maps. However, it has been completely levelled and no surface trace remains today. Modern building now located on site of earthwork. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 391. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
