Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Claraghatlea North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Con Duggan's double fence encloses a quarter acre of quiet grass on a NW-facing slope. The earthen bank rises two and a half metres outside but drops to sixty centimetres inside, creating a shallow bowl rather than a lofty wall. A three-metre causeway cuts the SE edge, inviting entry into a level interior where forgotten stones still line the base. The shape suggests human hands, yet local tradition calls it a fairy fort, warning that the boundary belongs to something older and less reasonable than farm logic.
In pasture, on NW-facing slope. Subcircular area (36m E-W; 29m N-S) defined by earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 2.5m) E->N; scarp elsewhere. Shallow external fosse (D 0.3m) ESE->SSW. Causewayed entrance (Wth 3m) to SE. Remains of internal stone-facing at base of bank to NW. Interior raised, grass-covered and level. According to Broker (1937, 45), fort in Con Duggan's, '1/4 acre, double fence'. Second ringfort (CO039-038---) c. 150m to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
