Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Castletown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible gap remains in the earthen ring, yet the missing entrance suggests a hidden doorway rather than a broken wall. The fort is a slight rise on the valley floor, not a distant hill, and the green band outside its bank marks the ditch that once kept intruders out. People may have lived inside this small circle, watched the valley, or withdrawn when danger approached. The fairies may have taken the fort afterwards, but the shape still belongs to the people who first made it.
Situated on a slight rise on the floor of Glencar valley. This is a grass and scrub-covered circular area (int. diam. 21.1m E-W; 20.8m N-S) defined by a round-topped bank of earth and stone (Wth 4m; int. H 0.2m at W to 0.65m at NE; ext. H 0.9m) planted with deciduous trees and an outer, intermittently-visible fosse evident as a band (Wth 2-3m) of lush vegetation. The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
