Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Castlequarter (kiltartan By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mairi's father built the first hall there, not knowing the ground already held a name. The fort waited beneath the new beams, patient as water, until the children stopped fearing the dark and began listening for its shape.
On a W-facing slope in low-lying grassland. Circular rath (diam. c. 31m), in fair condition, defined by two stone-faced banks and an intervening fosse. Overgrowth obscures the outer bank from S to W and no visible surface trace of it survives from W to N. A gap (Wth 1.7m) at E could be original. Field walls surround the monument from W through N to NE. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 24 November 2017
