Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Castleblagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Castleblagh holds a broken earthen ring where cattle still tear gaps in the bank and conifers crowd the centre. Its shallow ditch drains a modern slurry pit, yet a hidden passage remains in the northwest quadrant. The fort has stopped being a fort and become a living edge, part farmyard, part memory, still shaping the land around it.
On N-facing slope, to N of farmyard and to E of Philip's Wood. Circular area (38m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.6m); external fosse (D 0.5m). Causewayed entrance (Wth 4m) to N. Bank cut by numerous cattle gaps; stone-faced internally to NNW. Fosse mainly shallow and used to drain excess water from slurry pit. Interior planted with coniferous trees; slopes gently down to NNE; Man-made underground passage (CO034-04202-) in NW quadrant. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
