Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Black Fort in Carrowroe West is a well-preserved earthen ringfort with two stone-faced banks and a central ditch. It stands forty metres long and thirty-seven wide in undulating grassland, large enough to hold a household, a herd or a hidden purpose. A silage pit has cut through its north-east edge, yet an underground passage still lies within. The fort has survived ploughs, weather and forgetting, keeping its shape while the region changed around it.
In undulating grassland. Known locally as 'Black Fort' (Neary 1914, 115, no. 114), this well-preserved subcircular ringfort (N-S 40m, E-W 37m) is defined by two stone-faced banks and an intervening fosse. A silage pit has been dug into NE section of the monument. Within the interior is a probable Man-made underground passage (GA030-028001-) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
