Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrowrevagh More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrowrevagh More holds a forty-eight-metre earthen ring on an east-facing slope, its bank and ditch still marking the boundary between human memory and fairy speculation. The entrance faces southeast, inviting sunlight into a space likely occupied by people who are now forgotten. The grasslands preserve the shape while local tradition transforms the residents, reminding us that measurement and mystery often describe the same forgotten life.
On an E-facing slope in grassland. Circular rath (D 48.5m), in fair condition, defined by a bank and external fosse; the latter is visible from SSW through N to NE. There is an entrance at ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
