Marianne, a young girl with red hair and a quiet mind, lived beside the fort with her grandmother. They kept goats, gathered herbs, and listened to the wind move through the grass. At night the fort seemed to breathe, not with fear but with presence, as if something old still lived inside its circle. Marianne stopped being afraid of darkness because the fort had taught her that visibility is not the same as life.
