What is recorded here
Half a kilometre of rope stretched across the muddy field would not have reached the other side. The ring stands thirty metres wide on a low eastern slope, its flat-topped bank still holding stones and earth after centuries of rain. A four-metre gap faces east, perhaps the entrance where someone once stepped inside without thinking. The ground slopes gently downward beneath a thick cover of rushes, and the view stretches south across open pasture. The shape is so plain it stops sounding like a monument and starts sounding like a room built for a person who watched the horizon.
In damp coarse pasture near the top of a low E-facing slope with clear views to the S. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. OS 6-inch maps. A subcircular rath (31.5m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by a flat-topped earth and stone bank (ext. H 0.35-1m; Wth 2.2-3.6m) and a fosse (Wth 2.4m; D 0.2-0.25m). A gap (Wth 4.6m) at the E may indicate the original entrance. A line of facing stones (L 1m) at the SW of the external bank suggests an original external stone revetment. The interior slopes down gently to the E and has a dense covering of rushes.

A subcircular earthen ringfort in Carroweragh, likely dating to the early medieval period, as indicated by its construction and mapping history. Known locally as a fairy fort, such sites were often believed to be the dwellings of fairies or ancient spirits in Irish folklore.
