Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigaunroe

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half a metre of earthen bank still circles a fern-choked chamber on the eastern slope, though young conifers now pierce the ditch where people once kept rain and intrudes out. The fort belongs to the long forgotten age when circular walls marked ownership, hearth and memory before roads or written names existed. A bungalow has since taken the field, yet the ring remains visible beneath grass and shadow, waiting for someone to walk its edge and imagine the hands that built it.
On E-facing slope, in grounds of bungalow. Roughly circular area (23m N-S) enclosed by heavily overgrown, earthen bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6m). Young coniferous trees planted in area of fosse W->E. Interior covered in ferns and long grass. Possible ringfort (CO018-069---) in same field c. 80m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
