Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrick (dawson)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated at the bottom of a SW-facing slope in pasture. Not depicted on the 1st or latest ed. OS 6-inch maps but identified on aerial photographs (CUCAP, AVN 62, BDL 58) as three concentric fosses, the SE quadrant of which has been truncated by a field boundary. Although the site has been levelled the outline is still defined by shallow fosses. Probably a trivallate ringfort. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
