Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carnaun (inchiquin By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carnaun held a thirty-metre earthen ring at the foot of a south-facing slope, marked on old surveys but vanished from ground level by 1999. That disappearance transforms the fort from a dead ruin into a living mystery: the earth swallowed what human hands had shaped. The field may still carry the memory of boundaries now invisible, inviting imagination rather than certainty.
At the bottom of a S-facing slope in pasture. Hachured on the Cassini 1920 OS 6-inch map and on the 25-inch map as a rath (diam. c. 30m) with an external fosse hachured along the W. A NW-SE field boundary crossing the NE quadrant is also indicated. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). On inspection in 1999 there were no visible remains at ground level.
