Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cappanihane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Four gaps in the bank suggest cattle walked through the fort repeatedly, treating an old boundary as a living path. The fort is no longer a closed chamber, but a place where animals and people kept crossing its edge.
In flat pasture. Circular area (23.9m N-S; 23m E-W) enclosed by tree-lined earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.3m) with external fosse (D 0.25m; Wth 1.3m). Bank overlain by field boundary NW->NE. Gaps in bank at N, E, SE and W, all of which appear to have been worn down by cattle accessing interior. Interior level and under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
