Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cappaboy More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Cappaboy More is a roughly circular earthen platform, 36 to 40 metres across, raised on a southeast-facing slope in County Cork. Its shallow western depression marks a silted-up fosse, while levelled field fences show the land has been worked and forgotten. People may have lived there, excluded others, or left behind a shape the imagination completes.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Roughly circular platform (c. 36m N-S; c.40.5m E-W) raised between 0.5m and 2.3m above surrounding ground level; shallow external depression to SW and W evidence of silted-up fosse. Surrounding field fences levelled. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
