Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cakestown Glebe

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No amount of grief or gold could move them, so the humans stopped asking and started watching. They built a small chamber at the fort’s edge, not to trap the sprites but to give them a place to be seen. The chamber had no lock because it was never meant to keep anyone out. It had a window facing the ringfort, a shelf for gifts, and a chair low enough for a child or a creature no larger than a cat. On clear nights the chamber became a viewing point for the fort, and the fort became a companion instead of a wound.
Located on a hillock in a fairly level, low-lying landscape. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 32.5m E-W; 31.5m N-S) defined by a scarp (at N: Wth 1.5m; H 0.65m; at W: Wth 2.2m; H 0.75m). There is no visible fosse or entrance. It had become overgrown by 1995 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 12 April 2019
