Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Boughil

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No one knows who built the vanished Boughil fort, but human hands shaped that ridge long before memory failed. The fairies inherit every abandoned human house, and Boughil is empty now. They took the fort back, erased its borders and left only the slope where it stood.
On SW-facing slope of a ridge overlooking extensive bogland to N. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 25m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
