Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on the summit of a small, natural hillock in rolling pastureland. The field has been reclaimed and the surrounding ground is very wet. An oval enclosure (diam. 28m NE-SW; 22m E-W) which has been badly damaged by quarrying in the N sector. The enclosing bank is only evident in the NE quadrant (Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.2m) - elsewhere it is reduced to a scarp (H 1.33m). Slight traces of an external fosse (Wth c. 2-3m) are visible at S. A N-S field boundary at the W side of the site may truncate it slightly. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
