Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Baunballinlough

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half-buried at the ridge's north end, the ringfort keeps its shape despite quarrying and age. Its bank and fosse still mark a circular room above the boggy valley, large enough for people, narrow enough to feel owned. The missing southern half does not disappear; it sinks beneath grass and memory, waiting for rain or foottraffic to reveal how much of the fort remains hidden.
At the N end of a N-S ridge, rising above the boggy valley floor. There are clear views in all directions. Only the N half of this circular ringfort is visible above ground level. It consists of a semi-circular area (int. dims. c. 20m E-W, c. 12m N-S) enclosed by a bank (Wth 2m; int. H c. 0.4m; ext. H 1.2-1.4m) and external fosse (Wth 3.5m; D 0.5-0.6m). The interior slopes to the E. The monument has been quarried into in the E quadrant. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 27 September 2017
