Fairy forts are earthen ringforts, and Barrowhouse held one: a circular area about 28 metres across, shaped by a bank, a shallow fosse and a slightly raised interior. It appeared on the 1888 and 1909 OS maps, then disappeared from ordinary sight. The fairness in its name may be mockery, wonder or warning; the earth kept the shape long after people stopped naming it plainly.
