Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Banard

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Ireland are earthen rings built by human hands, often misread as magical because they refuse easy explanation. In Banard, a rath sat in James Ryan's land with flights of steps leading into its depth. Those steps are closed now, and the ring has vanished from precise knowledge. What remains is a shape remembered through testimony: a boundary between ordinary ground and forgotten life.
A rath was recorded in the 1940s 'in James Ryan's land which had 'flights of steps into it though [these are] now closed' (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). This rath has not been precisely located. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
