Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Balrath (corkaree By.)

Situated on a slight natural rise, in gently undulating pasture immediately NNE of a modern farmyard. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped area encircled by a single row of trees. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped area (approx. dims. 28m N-S; 26.5m E-W) defined by a bank with external fosse, the bank is reduced to a scarp from WSW-W-N where monument has been incorporated into a field boundary. The monument appears to be used as a paddock within a modern farmyard as shown on Digital Globe aerial photography. Monument described in 1975 as a subcircular-shaped area (diam. 45m) defined by an earth and stone bank which has been reduced to a scarp with the remains of a shallow external fosse. There is a possible entrance gap (base Wth 2m; top Wth 4.3m) at NE, with a number of modern gaps elsewhere. The external fosse is not visible from WSW-W-NNW where a modern field fence has been built up against the bank. The interior has a gentle NE-facing slope.
