Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyvodock East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible fort remains, but local memory still draws a thirty-five metre circle on the flat Cork plain. That imagined boundary is not nothing. It is the difference between a field and a place where people stood together.
In pasture, on flat plain. Shown as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Local tradition of ringfort. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
