Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyvoddy

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballyvoddy, County Cork: a 27-metre earthen ring with a broken bank and faint outer ditch, occupying level pasture like a forgotten room in the field. People may have lived there, herded there, or simply avoided it after dark. The names and shapes suggest both: a practical home that became a warning, and a warning that became a home for stories.
In level pasture. Circular area (27m N-S; 27m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1m) SSE->NW; scarp (H 0.7m) elsewhere; external fosse survives SSE->N as slight depression. Break in scarp to SE and in bank to SSW (Wth 3m). Interior appears to be slightly raised above level of surrounding field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
