Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyryan (idrone East By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for everyone. The name itself is a warning. Behind every fairy fort is a chamber where human thoughts go to be changed. The chamber has no walls, no doors and no light. It uses the living person as its shape. What enters the chamber leaves different. The chamber does not take life. It takes the boundary between self and world. That is why fairy forts are feared. They do not kill. They rewrite.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 In low-lying area. Traces of curving E side of ringfort (est max. original diam. c. 45m).
A fairy fort in Ballyryan, likely an early-medieval ringfort, is traditionally associated with local folklore involving fairies and other supernatural beings. Such sites were often believed to be the dwellings of the "good people" and were treated with reverence or fear by local communities.
