Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynarooga Beg

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not the castles of tiny people but abandoned human settlements misread through centuries of fear and wonder. In Ballynarooga Beg, a circular earthen bank still marks the boundary of one such place, though cattle have worn a gap through the wall and grazing has softened the edge. The field may have belonged to a family, a clan or a forgotten chief before becoming a fairy fort in the mouths of later people. What is certain is that humans shaped the land, departed, and left behind a circle large enough to remember but vague enough to become a story.
In pasture, on slight S-facing slope. Circular area (25m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.25m) with external fosse (D 0.3m; Wth 1.2m). Gap (Wth 1.2m) in bank at ESE probably caused by cattle accessing interior; much of bank heavily eroded by cattle. Interior level and under rough grazing.
