Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynamona (barretts By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide in plain sight, wearing pasture and forgetting as cloaks. Ballynamona is no different: a ringfort reduced to faint bank traces, swallowed by grass and time. What is lost is not nothing. It is a life lived without witness, a room shared with rain and roots. To stand beside it is to join its quiet company, not to solve it.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. During inspection of newly discovered Man-made underground passage (8844) in April 1976, 'faint traces of bank' visible c. SSE->NW,in NE corner of field (UCC). Field fences removed; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
