Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed because people stopped remembering the hands that built them. In Ballynaboul a roughly circular bank about thirty metres across stood on a north-facing slope, already cut through by a field boundary when mapped in 1842. That boundary may have been the first forgetting: a line drawn across a house, farm or refuge until its shape became a story about fairies. The low rise left behind is not magical, but it is not nothing either. It is the remainder of a place people lived in, altered, abandoned and renamed.
