Magic and mystery surround the origin of Ballymacowen. The oval earthwork stands on a ridge, marked by a raised bank, shallow ditch, and western entrance. People may have lived there before fading from memory, while cattle still break the ancient line. The fort remains visible in ordinary farmland, inviting imagination rather than claiming a proven human story.

In arable land on E face of NE-SW ridge. Oval, slightly raised area (24m N-S; 36m E-W) enclosed by earth and stone bank (H 1.8m), with external fosse (D 1.2m). Entrance (Wth 3.5m) with causeway to SW. Cattle break to NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
