Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymackesy

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not places where humans should sleep or play at midnight. In Ballymackesy, a shallow circular scar remains in level pasture, about twenty-eight metres across, with a dense hidden interior and a thin drain cut along its edge. The shape may have served people long before it became a warning in local thought. Whatever it was, it stopped being ordinary when the field swallowed it.
In level pasture. Circular area (diam. c. 28m) defined by scarped edge (H c. 0.5m), with slight trace of external fosse (D 0.1m) SSE->NNE. Drain has been cut along base of scarped edge NNE->SSE where field boundary skirts enclosure. Interior level and covered by dense overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
