Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballylahiff (glenquin By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half-swallowed by water and bramble on a wet Limerick slope, the fort keeps its shape only in the patience of its banks. Two rings of earth still curve around a hollow that no longer drains, while a narrow gap at the south-west invites entry into darkness. The fairies may have built it, but human hands certainly shaped the stone and soil before forgetting the name.
In waterlogged pasture, on gentle NE-facing slope. Roughly circular area (39m NE-SW; 43m NW-SE) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks with an intervening fosse; enclosing element is covered with dense overgrowth. Inner bank (int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.9m) incorporated into linear field boundary E->SSE. Gap in bank (Wth 3.4m) at SSW. Fosse (Wth 4.6m) evident all round but best defined NNW->ENE. Outer bank (int. H 1.3m to base of fosse; ext. H 1.1m) only evident NNW->NE. A linear field boundary extends SE from NE end of outer bank to form corner with field boundary which incorporates part of inner bank. Interior waterlogged and slopes gently down to NE. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
