Ballykilty is called a fairy fort because people believed fairies lived there. It was a real earthen ringfort, about twenty-eight metres across, set above a break in the slope where four roads met. The north-south road still curves past the spot, as if remembering the circle. Farmers later levelled the earth, and the fort disappeared under pasture and traffic. The name preserved what the land forgot: a place set apart, dangerous to disturb, and never entirely empty.
