What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Ballyhooly South is a circular earthen ringfort, twenty-eight metres across, on a gentle south-east facing slope in County Cork. Its bank stands two metres high inside and two point two metres outside, enclosing a grassy interior that slopes downward to the east. The shape suggests human making, yet local names often reserve fairy fort for places where ordinary explanation thins. It may have been a dwelling, a boundary marker, or a childhood warning about unseen residents. The earth still holds its line, quiet and unbroken, while pasture grass grows soft across the top.
In pasture, on gentle SE-facing slope. Circular area (28m E-W; 26m N-S) defined by earthen bank (int. H 2m; ext. H 2.2m) WSW->N; grass-covered low rise elsewhere. Interior slopes down to E. No visible surface trace of lime kiln shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map at WSW side of enclosure.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
