Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygrennan (connello Upper By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballygrennan is a 22m earthen ring in marshy pasture, its scarped edge rising 1.4m above a waterlogged fosse where a large boulder still lies at the southwest. Gorse bushes choke the damp interior, suggesting people once shaped the land before forgetting the name or leaving it to the stories. The circle does not claim to be magic, but it keeps the shape of human effort buried under water and time.
In level marshy pasture. Circular area (diam. 22m) defined by scarped edge (H 1.4m; Wth 1.7m) with external waterlogged fosse (D 0.9m; Wth 2.1m). Large boulder lies in fosse at SW. Interior is marshy and partially overgrown with gorse bushes. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
