What is recorded here

Clear in 1841 and shadowed since, the Ballygrenane fort is a 32-metre earthen oval, not a completed chamber or unchanged fairy palace. A quarry stands beside it, and the remaining bank still marks the edge of a place shaped for human life. What is missing has not stopped the ground from keeping its form.

Internal diameter 32m N-S, 25m E-W Clearly marked on the 1841-42 OS map as a circular enclosure, this site is also marked on the 1939 map, though not as clearly defined. A quarry lies immediately E of this site. Today this possible rath has been much distorted and only survives as a sub-oval area which rises to a maximum of 2.5m above the surrounding land. From the S to E slight trace of an enclosing bank can be noted. It is c 2m wide and rises to 1.3m high externally and 1.4m above the interior. 2m NE of this site is a mound (KE010-073001-) with a depression in the centre. This feature is possibly connected to the fort. The interior is sloping NW and is at a higher level than the surrounding land. The above description is derived from C.
