What is recorded here
Quarrying destroyed the Ballygowloge fairy fort, erasing the circular earthworks marked on the 1841-42 Ordnance Survey map. The loss turns a familiar Kerry landscape into an absent room, where forgotten hands may have shaped, entered or abandoned the ring before stone-hungry men took it apart.
Marked on the 1841-42 OS map as a circular enclosure, the site has now been completely destroyed and there is a quarry in its place.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 417. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
