Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyegny Beg

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible gap breaks the twin rings, yet the uninvited enter through the solid earth while the conscious walk past. The fairy fort in Ballyegny Beg keeps its chamber hidden beneath pasture and overgrowth, waiting for somebody reckless enough to stop listening.
In pasture, atop hill. Circular area (diam. c. 35m) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks with intervening fosse. Inner bank (ext. H 3.3m) is completely covered by dense overgrowth as is all of interior. Fosse (Wth 2.6m) is surrounded by low outer bank (int. H 1.05m; ext. H 0.35m). Field boundary abuts site at NNE. A shallow linear depression (L 16m E-W) abuts outer bank at NNW. An active quarry is located 20m to W. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
