Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballycurragh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and the invisible children still circle Ballycurragh, entering the earth where no gate appears and returning with red clay on their feet. The fort is not lost, only shifted beside the world, waiting for someone stubborn enough to follow the children instead of asking permission.
Situated on a low ridge in undulating countryside. Poorly preserved bivallate ringfort which now survives as a circular area (diam 50m) defined by two poorly preserved earthen banks visible from S to W only with intervening fosse (Wth 13m). A field wall intersects S side of site destroying the enclosing banks. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
