Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballycullane Upper

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballycullane Upper: a circular enclosure in low-lying marshy terrain, County Limerick, Ireland. The earthworks were levelled, but the site still shows as a circle of taller grass and slightly drier ground among rough pasture. That much is clear. What is missing is the life that shaped it: whether people lived there, tended it or abandoned it when the marsh took back the work.
In low-lying marshy terrain. Monument, depicted as circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. Site is now evident as circle (24m N-S; 22m E-W) of taller grass and slightly dryer ground in field of rough marshy pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
