The earth and stone ringfort at Ballycullane fell within living memory, leaving only a semi-circular scar on the steep slope above Dingle Bay. That sudden loss suggests people valued the land more than the ancient shape it once held. The forgotten fort still stands in the gradient of the ground, waiting for someone to notice what disappeared.

A ringfort in this field was apparently destroyed within living memory. It was constructed of earth and stone. A fairly level, roughly semi-circular platform, abutting the S side of the N field wall, may indicate its location. This measures 26m E-W x 20m N-S and is raised a maximum of c. 1.75m above the external ground level on the S downhill side. The perimeter is also raised slightly above the interior. Some of the heaps of stone which occupy the E part of the platform seem to be the remains of walls but are too confused for definite interpretation. The site lies on a fairly steep S facing slope overlooking Dingle Bay and Castlemaine Harbour. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne.
