Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballycorban

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

That is the Irish word for a ringfort. Rath means a fortified place, often circular, with an earth bank and sometimes a ditch. Fairy fort is a later folk name. People saw old rings and believed fairies lived there because the shape matched fairy stories. Both names point to the same kind of place: a small defended or occupied area made by humans, later dressed in myth.
On an E-facing slope to N of Ballycorban House. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (39m E-W; 35m N-S) defined by a bank and external fosse; the latter is evident only at E. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 14 October 2016
